Celebrating Juneteenth at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park
Last weekend, members of the WLA Studio team had the privilege of attending the Juneteenth celebration at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina—a place whose story and significance continue to inspire us.
As landscape architects and preservation planners, we are honored to have played a role in the planning and design of this extraordinary site. Seeing the park filled with families, music, educational programs, and community gatherings during the Juneteenth festivities was a powerful reminder that great places are not simply designed—they are activated and given meaning by the people who experience them.
Historic Mitchelville occupies a unique place in American history. Established in 1862, Mitchelville was the first self-governed town of formerly enslaved people in the United States. The community became a symbol of freedom, resilience, and self-determination, and today the park preserves and interprets that remarkable legacy for future generations.
WLA Studio completed the Landscape and Interpretive Master Plan for Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park in partnership with the Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park organization. The master plan sought to balance preservation of the site's archaeological and cultural resources with the creation of spaces that foster education, reflection, and community engagement. Trails, interpretive areas, gathering spaces, and landscapes were carefully envisioned to connect visitors with the stories of those who built and sustained this pioneering community.
Experiencing the Juneteenth celebration firsthand offered a meaningful opportunity to see how the park's vision continues to evolve. Throughout the weekend, visitors of all ages gathered to honor Juneteenth through music, storytelling, performances, and shared experiences. The atmosphere reflected the enduring spirit of Mitchelville itself—a place where history is remembered, celebrated, and passed on to future generations.
For the WLA Studio team, the occasion was especially rewarding. Few moments are more gratifying than seeing a project come alive and serve its intended purpose. Watching the community gather in a landscape designed to commemorate freedom and resilience reaffirmed our belief in the power of place to tell stories and strengthen connections.
We are grateful to the Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park organization for its continued stewardship of this nationally significant site and for creating opportunities like the Juneteenth celebration that bring history to life. It is an honor to see Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park continue to grow as a place of remembrance, learning, and celebration.
As Juneteenth reminds us each year, the stories of freedom and perseverance embodied at Mitchelville remain as relevant today as ever. We are proud that WLA Studio's work has helped preserve this legacy and create a landscape where these stories can continue to be shared for generations to come.
