Rock Harbor Lodge, Isle Royale

Rock Harbor Lodge Guest House Historic Structure Report, Isle Royale National Park

WLA Studio is teaming with Seven Generations Architecture and Engineering to produce a historic structure report for Rock Harbor Lodge Guest House. The building is located at Isle Royale National Park in Keweenaw County, Michigan, a remote island along the northern shore of Lake Superior. Rock Harbor is situated on the east side of Isle Royale near the northern tip of the island. Facing southeast onto Rock Harbor, the Guest House is part of the Rock Harbor Lodge complex situated along the small cove of Snug Harbor. It is notable that Isle Royale, along with the western Upper Peninsula and much of northern Wisconsin, is land ceded by the Ojibwe in the 1842 Treaty of LaPointe and its 1844 adhesion.

The Rock Harbor Lodge Guest House is a contributing structure to what is referred to as the Rock Harbor Lodge Historic District.  It is considered to be one of the best surviving examples of resort architecture on Isle Royale. Built in 1922, the Guest House is associated with the first period of significance for Snug Harbor development beginning with the establishment of the resort in 1902 to 1943. The project team recently completed fieldwork (notably involving travel by seaplane) and is currently developing the historical background and context content for the document.
