Badlands are Great!

WLA Studio recently began work on a project in Badlands National Park to rehabilitate a Mission 66 resource. Conata Picnic Area was developed in the 1960s under an NPS program that focused on improvements to parks with an emphasis on master planning and visitor experience. The period is characterized by the concept of immersing visitors into the site and landscape and providing facilities that were distinctively modern. This is evident at Conata Picnic Area, where picnic shelters feature distinctly modern shade structures and the picnic area is surrounded by the butte landforms that make Badlands famous. The purpose of this rehabilitation project is to upgrade these facilities and enhance visitor experience while preserving the existing historic landscape features. WLA Studio is collaborating with Seven Generations Architecture + Engineering, WBK Engineering, and RATIO Architects on this project.
