Historic Cemetery Documentation Service Day

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, WLA Studio and the Jim-Ree African American Museum hosted students from the UGA CED Student Historic Preservation Organization for a volunteer workday at Pinetown Cemetery in Elberton, GA. Pinetown is a historic African American cemetery managed by Aurolyn and Jimmy White, directors of the Jim-Ree African American Museum. WLA Studio's Liz Solomon led the workday, working with students to document the location, image, and inscription of each burial using the online Find-A-Grave application. Each individual burial marker is added to a nationwide database which helps to facilitate genealogy and historical research. This documentation ties into a larger project WLA is producing which will research and document the cemetery to develop a preservation maintenance plan. More on this project to come!
