Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park Featured in NYT

The New York Times featured Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park (HMFP) and its master plan (completed by WLA Studio in March 2020) as one of “8 Places Across the U.S. That Illuminate Black History.” WLA partnered with Proun Design and the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience to produce the 2020 master plan. We are continuing our partnership with the non-profit as they move forward with physical implementation of the master plan. In 2022, we assisted in siting new “bateau” interpretive panels in the park. Bateau are the flat bottomed boats traditionally used by Gullah Geechee fishers. As new physical improvement projects continue at the park, HMFP has engaged WLA to consult on these exciting efforts. Upcoming projects include additional interpretive elements at the site, visitor parking, and road improvements.
